US Twitter friends. I’m helping to organise a South Africa Syrah against the world tasting. Which wines should I track down from the United States? I’m a bit out of touch. Qupé still good? Wind Gap? Legier Meredith? Anything from Washington? Cayuse?

@JancisRobinson Totally agree. Tasted mainly 2021 whites so far - freshness, vigour, concentration, texture - it’s all there. So an especial shame there is so little to go round, but at least the inevitable price increases are matched by top quality

Am really enjoying the 2021 burgundies I have tasted so far. A very welcome break from sweetness and high alcohols. Though I realise 2021 was a complete pain for vignerons in Burgundy and that quantities are v limited so a complete pain for importers when allocating

Dream vertical @BerkmannWine - 20 vintages of Monte Bello🤩 Thanks to all who attended, John Olney & David Gates for hosting, and of course Paul Draper for his unwavering vision - the canvas onto which these indelible vineyard expressions are painted.Happy 60th @RidgeVineyards !

This week, two more wonderful speakers present ineffably eloquent wines: Anselmo Guerrieri Gonzaga with 8 vintages of @San_Leonardo and Emanuele Baldi with 6x Prunotto Bussia Vigna Colonnello. Thanks to all involved inc team @BerkmannWine

@robertjoseph @timatkin Yes but there’s one P missing - building a brand requires planning, pricing and perspiration, often over years or decades! On the ground, the Bordeaux model is all pull, no push, and that creates rather more losers than winners IMO

If one more producer tells me that their wine is about to be launched on the Place de Bordeaux, I’m going to scream.

@robertjoseph @timatkin Again, by what yardstick? Many top Italians benefited from the lauded vintage pair of 2015/16, irrespective of distribution strategy. And which Italian wine has shot up most in value recently? Sassicaia, which isn’t on the Place. There’s neither correlation nor cause here.

@AlexHuntMW @timatkin But... as Adam says in his piece and Liv-ex has said elsewhere, la Place (of which, I repeat, I've never been a fan) does seem to have worked very well commercially for some wines - particularly top Italians I guess if it doesn't, the brand owners will drop it
