@jelly_pack You read what, 3 books per year in secondary school? Are people arguing they don't have even a passing awareness of more than 21 books?

@clapifyoulikeme Everyone below a certain income threshold is entitled to legal aid. You pick a lawyer (some won't take legal aid cases) and they bill the government for time spent on the case. I think they have to justify the time they're spending and they get paid very small amounts.

@SpookyLovejoy Tfw you've slightly misjudged the kind of dildo you're supposed to bring to the dildo party and your "very weird" choice of dildo is now evidence you were definitely a murderer

just ran into her again. she called out to me for assistance: "Sir? Or ma'am? Sorry, I thought you were a guy! Wait, are you a guy or a girl?" "Guy." "You sound like a girl! I bet you were a boy before. Did you know they make sex changes for girls to be boys now? Like Cher's son"
James F. Thomas (of IDLEWILD)@james_f_thomas

an old lady in a wheelchair just rolled up to me in the grocery line and complimented my bomber jacket and then said “I like your look. I like that you don’t hide your sex change. You know I saw on the TV that they can have kids now? They don’t even have to look like women!”

@aidantaurus @uncanny_eli This seems not true if you're gay, plenty of gay men are into men being smaller than them. Obviously very difficult for short straight men but it's not a universal truth about attraction to men

@uncanny_eli Unfortunately it does matter in real life. Everyone I know who is attracted to men prefers taller men. I see so many beautiful women daily with the most average looking tall guys. It might be the most important physical attribute for desirable masculinity. Not a dealbreaker tho.

@SamanthaAsumadu Blue eyes are recessive so this is perfectly possible? If mum has 2x blue eyes genes and dad has 1x blue and 1x brown a child has 50% chance of each eye colour. Also genetics are a bit complicated and weird, spontaneous mutations happen

@McDivergence I guess the death within six months bit does at least exclude someone who will have to take increasing numbers of pills but will still not be in pain or having symptoms

@Alex_Autistic the Bill uses the term "inevitably progressive" which wouldn't apply to where there's no worsening of the condition, but one that stays somewhat stable with treatment but progresses over time would, I think, meet that part of the definition as it stands

there's a bit of the leadbeater bill where it defines terminal illness as that which "cannot be reversed by treatment" and it makes no sense and has barely been talked about.

@McDivergence If someone has no symptoms and isn't in any pain as long as they take a pill every day, but still has a non fatal condition are they considered terminally ill?

the only other provision in relation to treatment is about treatment (within the meaning of the bill) not including that which solely manages symptoms and pain. this leaves a lot of grey areas around a policy question that really needs to be grappled with, but has been ignored.

@AmandaB55744931 And for some people this might happen every time they see a new doctor. How can someone seek medical help if half the time they do doctors suggest they kill themselves

Just tuned into the #AssistedDying debate to see an MP raise the point that allowing Doctors to raise the subject of assisted dying is wrong and he can’t support the bill with that in it. I was pro- until I heard about this but a couple of weeks ago, and this thought terrifies me

@McDivergence Yeah it's incredibly fucked up. Really worrying it isn't getting considered at all in a case about discrimination law

@Alex_Autistic it borders on victim-blaming tbh. like sorry, you're not protected from discrimination bc you shouldn't be going getting pregnant in the first place 🙃

ngl, think the way the issues facing trans men in particular were handled here is a mess. this is basically saying that trans men shouldn't have remedies for pregnancy discrimination unless and until parliament decides to clarify what was obviously an unintended gap.
Philip Sim@BBCPhilipSim

Ruth Crawford suggests that any difficulties arising from the exclusion from pregnancy protections of someone who has a GRC, but falls pregnant anyway, should be resolved by Parliament rather than the courts

Whole court just pretending there weren't a bunch of articles in mainstream papers about @freddymcconnell giving birth while having a GRC Oh it'll never come up the court doesn't need to consider it
Philip Sim@BBCPhilipSim

Final ScotGov submissions are on pregnancy protections. Ruth Crawford stresses that someone with a GRC has legally committed to live in the male gender until death, and thus this doesn’t require to be taken into account by the court; but she will suggest some possible solutions…

@McDivergence And doing "what if a trans man with a GRC got pregnant, what a strange hypothetical" like Freddy McConnell wasn't in the papers a bunch for getting pregnant while legally male

@McDivergence Seems to just take "trans men shouldn't be allowed IVF " as an unchallenged assumption so strong it would be bad if trans men couldn't be discriminated against ? And they don't even attempt to justify it

@McDivergence I can't even imagine what they're worried about, like cìs men are going to somehow get pregnancy discrimination protections because trans men get them if and only if they're pregnant

@Alex_Autistic rationally, it's such an easy and obvious "problem" to answer that ofc it just includes anyone who is pregnant, and yet they've managed to tie themselves in knots over it

@McDivergence Particularly since paternity and maternity leave already function off "did you personally give birth" not "what is your legal sex" you can tell most of this is being argued by straight people

@McDivergence Bizarre to think that pregnancy protections were intended as a special protection for women rather than for *pregnancy* Previous arguments I've seen here were that the law passed making all previous laws gender neutral despite wording would apply here.
