While I didn't like the movie I thought many of the astronomy scenes in Don't Look Up were pretty well done.

@bilalmujahid @DJSnM That is a very typical size for such a comet. For example, last year’s Comet NEOWISE was about 5 km across.

@AmyMainzer @DJSnM Amy - what was the thinking behind the size of the impactor (6 to 10 km)? Is that more a common size for an Oort cloud object?

That time when @GeminiObs North photobombed the NEOWISE comet...

@DarkSapiens I assumed she was part of a large collaboration to monitor & characterize SN 1a using Subaru cf Moriya et al & Curtin et al. Since Kate’s code isn’t tuned for moving objects, she doesn’t notice it at first epoch. Subaru’s great sensitivity allows detection at large distance.

@AmyMainzer Oooh, nice detail, yeah! BTW, was she *searching* for SN Ia or monitoring ones already discovered by surveys? I've seen critics assuming the former, but I thought the latter made more sense with what we see!

Okay… A few comments on #DontLookUp because I've seen science communicators that didn't catch some dialogue or weren't aware of some facts when discussing it:

@DJSnM I was the science advisor for the movie and am the Principal Investigator for the NEOWISE mission to study near-Earth asteroids & comets. We had a scene showing that this was Kate’s third observing run spanning many months. She found precovery images of it. Scene cut for time.

But it decides to go with the highly unrealistic trope of figuring out that it's going to impact very quickly, with astonishing precision.
