30 Years Ago Today: Paul Nixon was tragically killed. An unfortunate chain of events was ignited months previously when Eric Cantona attacked football hooligan, thug and racist Matthew Simmons, which ultimately led to Paul Nixon's death. Manchester United were drawn to play Crystal Palace in the FA Cup Semi Final at Villa Park. Tensions were high between both sets of fans. A coach full of Palace fans stopped off at the New Fullbrook pub around half an hour’s drive from Villa Park. A coach of United fans opted against their designated turn-off travelling south on the M6, pulling up shortly afterwards at the New Fullbrook pub. For a while, the groups apparently drank harmoniously enough on either side of the bar. But the atmosphere steadily changed, growing uglier with regular chants of Cantona’s name. It was at around 3pm, with Palace fans drifting back to their coach outside before heading off to Villa Park, that the violence began in the car park. The coroner, Aidan Cotter, described what ensued as “10 minutes of hell”. Paul Nixon was struck in the head with a brick which ultimately lead to his death. EVERY FOOTBALL SHOULD RETURN HOME FROM A GAME OF FOOTBALL. 30 years later his family still haven't got justice. RIP Paul Nixon 🙏
