@Affriyie @Scripp_T It’s actually common. Lots of studies have shown that thalassemia cases are common in Ghana and that is why electrophoresis using Cellulose Acetate should not be reported as AA but A or SS but S.

@Scripp_T Possible but rare. Thalassemia syndrome can cause these abnormalities in some haemoglobin types when they’re passed on from parents to offsprings. The child may be having a strong “S” ( in layman’s terms) with a defective “A” which cannot be identified by the test method used.
