Monday is the centenary of CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien meeting – CSL said JRRT 'only needs a slap or two'. Tolkien was 34, Lewis was 27. Without their friendship and synergy, so much that I hold dear wouldn't exist, including many of my own friendships. Thank God for May 11, 1926.

I'm not even in the mood to joke about this, it's so depressing. You can't assign take-home essays anymore; it's completely pointless. Writing and reasoning abilities are very noticeably plummeting. Very discouraging to think where this is all going.

@EarendilBright Nolan can be a really good narrator, so I share your hopes! What weighs against it is that, in addition to the trailer, the films about Greek mythology that I've watched in recent decades have all been about disenchantment, so I'm already preconsciously wary against it.

@Arkhairo The trailer left me quite cold as well, and I agree about the tagline. I still want to hope that the actual treatment of these them in the movie won’t be so simplistic. The first teaser did open with Eumaeus (I believe) complaining about “Zeus’ law smashed to pieces” in Ithaca.

@AaronIrber - implicit (such as with Galadriel's redemption or Aragorn's restraint at showing off rank or flashing Andúril).

@AaronIrber I had the chance to talk a bit about that at the last Holy Moot but there's a theme of self-limitation and incompleteness as a divine mandate and condition of good transversal to the Legendarium. Sometimes is explicitly formulated (such as in the case of the Istari) or +

Is there a reason why both Gandalf and Aragorn (in the books) seem to be unable or unwilling to use their full power? Gandalf the White is not shown, in my memory, to go “all out” on the villains. I also don’t recall Aragorn being shown using Anduril in battle. He brings Anduril into battle, but is not depicted using it.

Five Socratic-based questions to improve your thinking. 1/2 5. What would it take to change your mind? Be specific. 4. If your best reason for believing that was false, would you still believe? (That's called a "real reason check".)

The first surviving book which described the rules of chess in which the queen is the most powerful piece as it is today was published by Luis Ramírez de Lucena around 1497, a Spanish chess player who was fond of queen Isabella and called the new rules "queen's chess".
