Old Navy like many large retailers, hires from very diverse communities. In big cities especially it’s common to have employees whose first language isn’t English. Not speaking fluent English doesn’t mean they’re unqualified—it often just means they’re new to the country earning, or working in multilingual environments. Stores usually don’t have a policy like only hire non-English speakers. It’s more likely you happened to meet a couple of employees on the same shift who were still learning. From the worker’s side imagine trying to do your job while navigating a new language—it’s like playing a video game where all the menus are in a language you’re still decoding . Tough, but they’re trying.

America says she was just in Old Navy and the workers currently on shift didn’t speak a single word of English “Is this still America?” “So I asked the one of the women that worked there like, Hey, do you know what the kids' socks are? And she goes, ‘no, English.’ — So then I asked another woman about something else. I was looking for a size and she didn't speak English either. Like, is this a thing in Old Navy?
