Perfect parrots, or popinjays as they were known in the early 14th century, when they were painted on this timber screen to a side chapel in wonderful St. Mary’s and All Saints Church, Willingham, Cambridgeshire 🤩

The ruins of Nunnaminster in Winchester, one of the most important nunneries in Anglo-Saxon England. It was founded by Eahlswith, widow of Alfred the Great in around 903. Her granddaughter, St Eadburh was raised in the nunnery and became a nun there, dying in 960. #OTD (18th April) 1161 Archbishop of Canterbury Theobald Bec dies. Henry II thankfully comes up with the perfect replacement for him, his friend and chancellor, the very talented Thomas Becket. Becket is reluctant but is eventually appointed a year after Theobald's death. What could go wrong?
