Adrien's biggest conflict (IMHO) is abandonment. Physical abandonment, emotional abandonment… and lies are just ANOTHER form of it, bc they make him feel unloved, left aside, not considered & its a pattern he grew up with & one that was used by Gabe as a form of power over him
