Friends and family also repeatedly ask me for my opinion on medical questions, and then are dissapointed with my answer. Its like going to a mechanic and being angry that he thinks the alternator is broken. Really makes me laugh. People expect that theyre 1 substance away from figuring it all out.

Akathisia is caused by psych med withdrawal but is also a side effect from a number of pharmaceuticals, not just withdrawal. Hell. The fact this fairly common reaction is hidden by pharmaceutical companies and renamed things like “restlessness” is criminal.

This is the product of a broken educational system - when most psychiatrists get their knowledge of medication from the British Association of Psychopharm which has long played down the risks of these drugs it leads to preventable harm to patients.

According to the psychiatrist in today’s MDT sertraline doesn’t cause withdrawal. My parents had to provide evidence to suggest otherwise. Feathers ruffled and it gets me nowhere. We need a safe place for people in withdrawal to go and not be told withdrawal doesn’t exist.

I think if you spend a lot of time on Twitter, you’d believe this to be true. Meanwhile, regular non-online psychiatrists have heard basically nothing of this. Some are only vaguely aware of any critical movement(s) at all.

@BasedPsychMD I’m on a slow taper supported by my psychiatrist in state system. It was extraordinarily difficult to get support for it but now we have a plan following Horowitz’ hyperbolic tapering, down to 2.5 mg olanzapine and going well

The worst part of not being able to get off psych meds is the gas lighting that ensues. Many people are given benzodiazepines or snris, and when they cant get off they are called an addict.
