As part of my thesis project on the #transitiontoadulthood for #neurodivergent young people, I've tried to summarise my findings into three guides. These are very light touch and intended to be conversation starters - please use & share if useful!

@LoTheAEP Ime young people know what they need pretty well, what they often need is someone to advocate for them to adults who will often dismiss their experience or question their priorities.

@LoTheAEP Helping school to understand, "spoons theory" is talked about in chronic illness space and helpful to understand energy management. In terms of school - encourage flexibility & supporting the YP to prioritise.

The desire for therapy assumes that a young person can easily open up to a stranger, that they can put their thoughts and feelings into words, and that they have a coherent sense of their life story. Relationships in school and the community can be far more natural and powerful.
Gerry🧠🌱@gerrydiamond71

The relationships we build with our young people can make the world of a difference. The majority of therapeutic moments don't take place in therapy, they take place in schools. Day in day out relational moments make a difference. 🧠🌱

We say this over & over but authorities aren't interested in this narrative. Just look at the numbers though. Any discussion on barriers to school attendance ought to be focussing on this. @Helen_Amass @AliJaneMoore @cjayanetti @darshnasoni @SianGriffiths6 @BBCWomansHour

Thank you to @ItsEmilyKaty and @CarrieGrant1 for highlighting this powerful research - our wonderful 12yo ND daughter created this graphic to highlight the stats - hope this is OK to share! #NotASchoolSkiver #AutismAwareness @teamsquarepeg @AutisticGirls_ scienceopen.com/document?vid=d…

Important large scale, multi-national, and naturalistic study. Key finding: Children who hear more adult talk speak more (and SES, gender, and multilingualism have minimal impact)
Dr Caro Rowland@CaroRowland

Why do some children learn language faster than others? Are girls faster than boys? And does learning two languages slow you down? New PNAS study of 1001 children in 12 countries across 6 continents pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn……. Paywalled so preprint here osf.io/preprints/psya…
