the most important NATO summit in history opens in Ankara in sixteen days. and somehow nobody noticed what happened this week. i need you to read this carefully. Trump will be there. Zelenskyy will be there. every NATO leader on earth will be there. the US Secretary of State already called it "probably the most important meeting in NATO's history." Ukraine's future. European security for the next decade. all of it. two days. one city. Erdoğan's city. and while the world was looking somewhere else, Russia's ambassador walked up to a microphone and told the host what to do. not privately. not through backchannels. not in a whispered diplomatic corridor. publicly. on the record. in a sit-down interview. "our expectation from the NATO summit is that it takes into account the new realities of the world." Russia. issuing expectations. for a NATO summit. to the country hosting it. and then, as if to make sure everyone understood exactly what kind of relationship this is, the ambassador said something else. "we have no connection to this alliance whatsoever. despite this, we are closely following developments." no connection to NATO. but expectations for what NATO should do. read that combination of sentences until you feel what it actually means. that is not the language of a rival power carefully managing its relationship with a difficult ally. that is the language of a country that has already calculated exactly how much Erdoğan's balance is worth. and decided the number is comfortable enough to say this out loud. but here is what i couldn't stop staring at when i found this. this interview didn't happen in isolation. four days before the ambassador gave it, Turkey's foreign minister flew to Moscow. two full days. met Lavrov. met the head of Russia's security council. and carried something with him that should have set off alarm bells across every European capital. a personal letter. from Erdoğan. to Putin. the man hosting the most important NATO summit in history sent a personal letter to the man NATO is fighting a war against. two weeks before the summit opens. and the world didn't notice. now think about what every leader flying into Ankara already knows. they will land in Erdoğan's capital. walk into his palace. sit in his chairs. look him in the eye. and need him more than they have needed any single ally in years. his Bosphorus controls the only entrance to the Black Sea. his drones have kept Ukraine in this war. his vote determines what actually gets decided in that room. they need all of it. and they will sit there knowing that the week before their planes landed, Moscow was publicly announcing its expectations for the meeting. and that Erdoğan's personal letter was already on Putin's desk. Erdoğan spent a decade building this position. the indispensable man. the great balancer. the leader who could call Moscow and Washington in the same afternoon and make both feel heard. he called it strategy. Russia just showed the world what it looks like from the other side. and here is the thing that nobody is connecting. there is a reason Russia is this comfortable. a specific reason. with a name and a face and a cell number in Silivri prison. Ekrem İmamoğlu. over 450 days in a cell. the man who represented a Turkey that made Russia nervous instead of comfortable. a Turkey that walked into NATO summit rooms as a genuine partner with nothing to hide and no letters to deliver to the other side. a Turkey that chose Europe not as a negotiating position but as a conviction. that Turkey died the morning the handcuffs went on. what replaced it is a country Russia is comfortable enough with to instruct publicly. three weeks before it hosts the free world. in sixteen days Zelenskyy will land in Ankara. he will walk into the palace. he will shake the hand of the man who imprisoned Turkey's most popular democrat. because Ukraine needs Turkey more than Turkey needs Ukraine right now. and Putin knows it. that is why the ambassador said it out loud. that is what İmamoğlu's cell actually costs. not just Turkey. everyone in that room. and the ones who didn't notice until now.
