In 2020, I spent $10k on ads and walked away with a $3k lossābecause I thought thatās all it took to win at getting rich.
Hereās what I learned.
When I launched my first dropshipping business in 2020, I had ZERO marketing experience. Like many new entrepreneurs, I fell for the "launch ads and get rich quick" mindset.
You've seen those YouTube gurus... "Launch your Meta ads and watch sales pour in overnight!" š
Here's the painful reality I discovered after burning through $10,000 in ad spend:
-Low-intent channels (like Meta ads) are TERRIBLE starting points for bootstrapped founders. Why? Because you're literally throwing ads at people who never asked to see them.
I was selling wireless breastfeeding pumps. The product solved a genuine pain point (I had a one-year-old daughter, so I KNEW the problem was real). But despite making 200 sales, I ended up $3,000 in the hole.
For months, I obsessed over improving my ads and funnels, convinced that was the solution. But I was attacking the wrong problem entirely.
The breakthrough came when I finally understood the difference between:
- High-intent channels: Where people actively SEARCH for your solution (Google ads)
- Low-intent channels: Where you interrupt people's scrolling (Meta ads)
When we launched BetterPic 18 months ago, we applied this lesson. Even though we still lost money for six months, we focused on capturing existing demand through search rather than creating demand through interruption.
The growth strategy that actually works for bootstrapped founders:
1. Start by capturing existing demand, not creating it
2. Focus on organic growth first (it's slow but sustainable)
3. Build multiple revenue pillars rather than depending on a single platform
4. Listen obsessively to customer feedback and improve your product
5. Invest in 24/7 customer support (our competitors close on weekends - we don't)
Today, BetterPicās traffic comes from:
- 30% direct (people who know us)
- 25% SEO (organic search)
- Plus targeted SCA and strategic partnerships
This diversification means that if Facebook makes an algorithm change tomorrow, we don't lose everything overnight.
The biggest lesson? Don't confuse different parts of the funnel. I don't even think in terms of "funnels" anymore ā just high-intent vs low-intent channels. And always start with high intent.

I made a mistake that cost us $3000 and $0 returns.
