@hischiersdevils It’s crazy. But I just looked at the current roster of NHL captains, and McDavid’s the only one I’d definitely do 1-for-1.
Dahlin and Suzuki would both be lateral moves. Matthews is too hurt.
Everyone else would be a downgrade over say a 5-year term. Lots of aging decliners.

@LaneMngmnt At most, it affected contracts for a couple players for a couple months. After that, any agent who can’t successfully argue that his client’s case is different (age, cap increases, term, position, etc) is a bad agent. CMD’s contract is ancient history at this point.

@BolFlas Sure, that’s great and a feature of the sport. I fail to see how this changes the very low barrier of disbelief required to believe the statement “teams have told or will tell first line and top pair players they cannot give more than $12.5m because they are not better than CMD.”

NBA Washington: Highest paid player makes 6.8x as much as the 5th highest.
NHL Washington: Highest paid player makes 1.6x as much as the 5th highest.
Both cap. Both in the “starting 5”.
NHL is egalitarian. And that’s a good thing.

The MLB STL Cardinals have just 8 of their 26 players earning over $850k this season.
The NHL STL Blues have 20 of their 23 players earning over $850k. Despite the NHL having half the revenue.
Hockey pays everyone.

@JFreshHockey Sacrificed millions and millions of dollars and more importantly likely hindered contract negotiations for other players going forward by doing so, just to hitch the waning years of his prime to a wagon currently underwater. I want more for him, but it’s hard for me to feel bad.

@ZaidJilani Been going on for decades. I have some family recipes we’ve been making for 50 years that I now have to triple or quadruple the jalapeño count to get the flavor profile accurate. First started seeing the signs around 2003 but it’s so much worse now.

Tkachuk was a 52% xG% vs one of the best teams in the league, generated 7 HD chances, led both teams w/ 5 drawn pens, and won 55% of FOs. He's a good player and there's no cause for concern. But for everyone who thinks one series defines a player, I hope this will be instructive.

I’ve warmed up to the idea of Brady Tkachuk being a #NJDevils trade target.
Bad playoff series and people overrating him aside, I actually think he’d work quite well as a supplemental piece where he doesn’t have to be THE guy.

Yes, according to the current rules it was legal.
But these head-trauma-inducing hits are bad for the growth of the sport. All head contact should be banned. More people will follow the sport if these plays are removed. That increases salaries for everyone.

19 of 20 NHL players studied after death have had CTE. I doubt a single player on the ice knows that, so they choose to give each other brain injuries "as part of the game". When they meet again in a dementia clinic in a few decades, I suspect they'll regret playing this way

@JeffMarek I enjoyed hockey in the 1980s as much as the next guy. But I enjoyed the NFL in the 80s too.
And it’s no surprise that NFL revenues skyrocketed after they removed hits like this from the game. The NHL can’t market the speed and skill while officiating like it’s 1986.
