For my friends who are pastors (in particular). I read recently where Thomas Merton is telling a story about someone of high esteem and societal “worth” writing to him and said, “You are wasting your life!” Merton’s reply: “I am here because God has called me to be here.”

Sharing this again because it's dumbfounding to me that the vast majority of takes, in print and online, of Merton's affair is that it was good for him when this is demonstrably false from his own journals. The Catholic-lite crowd needs some correction. comment.org/mertons-nurse/

Finished up the chapter on Temperance. Wrote sections on chastity and curiositas. Finished the chapter at nearly 8k words. Done with the cardinal virtues. Now on to Faith. May need to take a break in writing and do more research. We'll see. I'd like to keep writing.

The spiritual formation industry often tends to promote a hyper individualistic spirituality that leads to a Christianized secularization. The Christian faith was always intended to reorder our lives to be more communal, while upholding the dignity of every person. The problem with the spiritual formation industry as we know it today is that it doesn’t actually demand a reordering of our lives to be more communal, but often only demands that we reorder our individual habits to feed ourselves above all else.
