@kobbyschram I’ve attached two maps to show all the key African slave routes. If you want sources: ‘Slaves in Africa and the Slave Trades from Africa’, or ‘Slavery and the Slave Trade in the Context of West African History’. They both refer to trades which have existed since 2nd century.

Europeans expanded the market across the Atlantic but they didn't create the slave market. Africa's interior was already a hub of slaving networks, which reached markets as far as Asia. Ashanti & others supplied thousands to coastal Europeans for guns and were willing partners.

@BritzerHist Europe didn't join a market. They creaed the market. Slaves were in Africa yes. But they were not traded like it when the Europeans came.

Honestly, the Chagossians just deciding to unilaterally establish their own pro-British government and go resettle the islands was a stroke of genius. Immediately makes the Starmer surrender deal so much more difficult to sell and implement. God speed to them

WONDERFUL update video from Chagossian First Minister Misley Mandarin from the #Chagos Islands. Some lessons for us all too! 🇮🇴🇬🇧

#Gabon #Africa Christ has nothing to do here. It's historical facts. It's easier to blame others but what's your part of the responsibility? It didn't bother because it was banal and prosperous. The slave trade was regarded as normal. Edo banned it. But resumed it for money:1730

@MbaAristide My brother in christ. Are u aware that the present nation of Ghana is a fractured version of the Ashanti empire? They put the wollof people in Ghana today, do u know that britain insisted on slaves for any trade to go on

My own view is it doesn’t make much sense for African countries to claim reparations for the slave trade when they themselves kidnapped and sold Africans into slavery. What are they claiming for? Exceeding the quota?🤷🏿‍♀️ It all just feels like bait apple.news/AueUusiRJQQqUA…

British institutions must educate people on the whole trade, from the willing African participation, to Britains efforts to abolish it. Until that happens there is no point having a debate as it wasn’t as black and white is activists make it out to be.

This poll just shows that the true nature of the slave trade is misunderstood and misrepresented. Too many people are under the impression that Europeans the took the Africans themselves rather than realising Europeans expanded a pre-existing market with a thriving supply chain.

Britain should not pay reparations. We abstained from voting against paying reparations for the transatlantic slave trade in yet another egregious example of this Labour Government’s desperate attempt to curry favour. The transatlantic slave trade was a deplorable and horrific period of history, but it was just that, history. I vehemently disagree with these calls. If we are to be held to account by the UN, so too should those tribes who participated in capturing and selling their enemies and rivals into slavery in exchange for trade, wealth and weapons.

@ShipleyWrites Brilliant article, I read it earlier. I hope some of these who reject Africa’s willing involvement will take the time to read it

@StarlingCorey And there we go. Even with Britain outlawing it, the local African population still continued to practice it, but activists will say that slavery was purely due to the European powers
