Not really a funk or a jazz album - Street Lady has a sound closer to a blaxploitation soundtrack than anything else. Many critics of the era saw this as Byrd selling out to the sound of the day, but I think it’s aged much better than that. I true classic of a 70’s sub genre

One of the best slabs of Latin style funk of all time and it came from….Belgium. Whatever they were putting in their Westmalle back then must’ve been funky cuz this record hits Afro-Cuban rhythms, straight funk, and incredible instrumentation throughout. “Lupita” is the banger.

After an unbelievably shitty week, Here's Hank Ballard and the Midnighters to get us real gone--plus what Frank Schiffman, booking agent at the Apollo Theater, thought of the band, to remind us to not listen to the assholes. youtube.com/watch?v=4zKPI1…

@DavidWondrich I’m sure they were pretty wild and vulgar on stage. Their last hit before they changed their name from The Royals to The Midnighters was “Work With Me Annie”. And as previously noted here, after all that workin’ “Annie Had A Baby”. Bet there was some workin goin on backstage!

@DavidWondrich Soup Bones and Chuck Steak are two of the best musician names ever. I’d own all of their records if they’d had any!

Something a little different today: a thread poking around in the early history of ragtime, via some newspapers from eastern Kansas, one of the music’s cradles. 1/19

@mdoudoroff Maybe not. The issue was not with Diageo, it was with Picon, who refused to divulge its “secret recipe” to the FDA, resulting in it being banned from importation. They lost their “grandfathered” status (which Chartruese etc enjoy) when their original distribution ended circa 2000

@AudreySaunders So sad 😞 Such a revelatory place in the mid 90’s. Studying those bartenders while they worked was at least 50% of my education. And the drinks were always impeccable. 💔

@Latitude29_NOLA @BeachBumBerry This is such sad and terrible news. Such a wonderful gentleman, it was always such a pleasure to be around him. I’m at a loss for words so I’ll just say Rest in Peace
