Another cool thing - Newhouse's air leakage rate is 0.053 cfm/sf @ 75 pa (0.23 ACH50) - beating the passive house target without it being a formal goal! Lots of coordination went into airtightness detailing here, specifically at mass timber panels and steel structure elements.

The original Newhouse Building was meant to be temporary, yet lasted 90 yrs. The replacement building is a timeless addition to the WA Capitol Campus. Mass timber/steel structure w/ reclaimed sandstone & douglas fir. Check out the construction timelapse! youtu.be/Z5NsorsZSY4?fe…

@JesseTayRiver Thank you Jesse - I truly appreciate this. Thankfully my envelope restoration network seems to overlap with many folks in the fire restoration world so I've been able to find great support so far - but it's still early days!

@BuildingSciFan Sorry to hear this but glad you and the family are ok. I've done some fire restoration work (rebuilding my aunt's place is how I ended up in the US) so reach out if you need anything!

Chat, I recently had a devastating fire at home, the building I love most, and am still reeling from it. I hope to document the rebuilding journey by writing about it. I hope you'll follow along. Totally candid, feedback encouraged. rebuildinghome.com

I bet the bird that lived here was cozy for a while. My guess is northern flicker - any other guesses? (House in Seattle)

Are there any good resources out there on ancient pueblo architecture that focus on building science?

Got to tour the cave dwellings in Mesa Verde NP on our summer family road trip. Very humbling to see common sense building science in ancient pueblo construction - overhang protection, small openings, thermal mass. The fresh air intake shafts probably awed me the most though.

@anotherDaphne Most PVC roof membranes are incompatible with asphaltic materials, because the plasticizers that make the PVC roof membrane flexible will migrate away and leave the roof membrane brittle.
