Study of trans athletes concludes blanket sports bans are a mistake. The landmark IOC-funded study looking at strength, power and aerobic capacity of trans athletes suggests that sports federations should consider its findings carefully. Results from a first-of-its-kind study comparing the strength, power and aerobic capacity of transgender athletes with c_sgender athletes have been published in a major medical journal, with the authors cautioning sports bodies not to pass blanket bans without doing proper research. Researchers invited 23 trans women and 12 trans men to undergo a series of performance tests in laboratory conditions, while also putting 21 c_s women and 19 c_s men through the same tests. In certain cardiovascular tests, the trans women performed worse than the c_s women, and were found to have less lower-body strength, according to the study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. The main takeaway message is the requirement of international federations (and their “experts”) to treat trans women very differently to c_s men. It follows that research conducted comparing biological men to biological women is almost irrelevant in this debate and evidence from such comparisons should not be used to inform policy as is the case by many “armchair professors” advocating the default ban position. This groundbreaking study also stresses the need for studies to be conducted in trained individuals / athletes. Research is showing trans girls are 19% kg for kg weaker than c_s girls and and they have less leg strength and lower endurance levels than c_s girls. Alvares & colleagues suggests that trans women can produce less force per gram of muscle than both c_sgender women & c_sgender men and combined with VO2 peak/FFM findings, possible cellular dysfunction in the muscle of trans women [Alvares et al., 2022]. An INTERNATIONAL LEVEL trans woman CYCLIST in this study demonstrated an ~15% LOSS of aerobic capacity with 3 months of GAHT & a 19-33% & 15-30% LOSS of lower and upper body strength respectively with 18 months of GAHT.
