@lukeisamazing Even in the movies it's clear Gollum is someone who needs help and only doubles down in his selfish ways when it's literally beaten into him that being selfless and helping others will only get him hurt and punished.

@lukeisamazing Tolkien argued that the most tragic moment of the story is Gollum almost repenting and changing for the better before entering Shelob's lair, but then deciding not to after Sam is skeptical! He has a great deal of empathy for Gollum

this is also insane given Gollum’s characterization and bc Tolkien spent a good amount of his time later in life trying repeatedly to convince anyone who would listen that Gollum is a pitiable figure, worthy of a helping hand and not contempt. Tolkien himself absolved Gollum
