Trad West
Trad West@trad_west_ยท
But Tolkien also gave us the way to fix it:
Trad West@trad_west_

Did you know J.R.R Tolkien predicted exactly how the modern society would fall? How, you might ask? By telling us how Gondor fell into ruin. In his description of the decline of Gondor, we see the blueprint of a dying civilization. It wasn't an external enemy that rotted Gondor from within. It was a spiritual sickness: the prioritization of the past over the future. Tolkien writes: "The old wisdom borne out of the west was forsaken. Kings made tombs more splendid than the houses of the living, and counted the old names of their descent dearer than the names of their sons." They became obsessed with aesthetics, comfort, and memory, while losing the will to create. The death of vitality. Are we not experiencing this with low birth rates and the death of excellence in favor of comfort? Tolkien describes "Childless lords" sitting in "aged halls musing on heraldry." This is the ultimate symptom of cultural decay: sterility. When a society values its history ("names of descent") more than its future ("names of sons"), it has already surrendered it's spirit to the grave. It retreats into "high, cold towers" to ask questions of the stars, obsessing over theory and abstraction. While the real world crumbles below. But again, how did he know? How did Tolkien see into our future? Because he understood that civilizations don't die by murder; they die by suicide. They die when they stop fighting for the living and start worshipping the dead. The lesson is simple: a culture that does not prioritize its children over its comfort is building nothing but a splendid tomb.
