Of your charity, pray for the repose of the soul of J., who was murdered by her son this evening.

@bcpbem I saw it on FB first where it was a bit longer and it broke me out of my sleepy haze to realise that it was more than just Wednesday in Holy Week!

The real issue in Holy Week is not the liturgies itself, but rather the lectionaries! Whether you use added ceremonies or not, if you're not using the traditional Prayer Book lectionary, you've lost the coherence of traditional Anglicanism in Holy Week.

By contrast, St. Mark's Passion on Monday and Tuesday feel like they get somewhat short thrift not being enacted in any way, though the words do speak for themselves highlighting God bearing our sorrows and his love for us.

The traditional lectionary's use of all four passions throughout Holy Week does not conflict with adding in additional ceremonies such as footwashing, veneration of the Cross, or the Liturgy of the Palms. They actually quite enhance reading all the passions each year.

Some pastor somewhere: "Today is not just a day for spies, but for fools. On this Spy Wednesday, let me tell you about the real April Fool, the one who betrayed Jesus - Judas."

A cutting reflection from Cardinal Ratzinger, Good Friday 2005: "Pilate is not utterly evil. He knows that the condemned man is innocent, and he looks for a way to free him. But his heart is divided. And in the end he lets his own position, his own self-interest, prevail over what is right. Nor are the men who are shouting and demanding the death of Jesus utterly evil. Many of them, on the day of Pentecost, will feel "cut to the heart," when Peter will say to them: "Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God... you crucified and killed by the hands of those outside the law." But at that moment they are caught up in the crowd. They are shouting because everyone else is shouting, and they are shouting the same thing that everyone else is shouting. And in this way, justice is trampled underfoot by weakness, cowardice and fear of the diktat of the ruling mindset. The quiet voice of conscience is drowned out by the cries of the crowd. Evil draws its power from indecision and concern for what other people think."

@cdnusboy Very much encouraging this for my parish this year. Apart from the other daily devotions I prepared for them, I've sent out the daily passion readings and am offering daily mass with them. It's a worthwhile experience to rest with our Lord's passion.

Foremost of spiritual practices in Holy Week for me is the daily reading of the Passion accounts in the Book of Common Prayer, beginning Palm Sunday with Matthew's, Monday-Tuesday with Mark's, Wednesday-Thursday with Luke's, and Good Friday with John's account. Tolle, lege.

@Make_it_Raines TEC has a ridiculously un-Anglican ecclesiology that we've only sort of being trying to fix since the sixties. We treat our bishops like princes with lavish salaries and perks, but limited Episcopal authority. They are CEOs in Holy Orders. How very American!

I find it a bit tiresome how English ppl like to insist that the Episcopal Church is very different from the CofE.

@theboot76 No, but I did quote LEP on the divine nature of the courts, spoken into existence by Christ according to Hooker.

If we want to be a prophetic church, we need to bring God's Word to the people because God's Word changes hearts: making secular or pragmatic arguments isn't enough. It will be more unpopular but we need to trust in the sufficiency of God's Word to do God's Work.
