Rant time. I made the post below the other day and didn’t even know Mike Meyrs was on SNL again. This time apparently he was wearing part of a Canadian military uniform and an RCN Petty Officer 2nd class epaulette. Look, if he wants to be a Canadian booster abroad, great. If he wants to wear a team Canada Hockey Jersey, and wave the flag no problem. But if this is his idea of making a rebuke of Trumps comments about NATO countries (including Canada) being a bit off of the front line, it’s cravenly opportunistic. All the time that Canada was in Afghanistan, was he one of the performers that went over to entertain our troops? Nope. Rick Mercer was, and hosted the kick ass Christmas in Kabul with Tom Cochrane. Lots of other Canadian singers like Julian Austin, Michelle Wright and comedians like Kenny Shaw went too. Even more, Mercer at least has a history of highlighting the achievements, struggles and daily lives of CAF members at home and abroad. If he wants to toss on a tunic to make a statement he’s got the cred to pull it off. Mike Meyrs doesn’t. So from my perspective he chose and treated that uniform like any other prop from wardrobe, solely for playing a part to deliver his political commentary and to increase his popularity in Canada. Pretty easy to flex in the uniform when you don’t have to run the risk of dying in it, especially when you get to take it off once the cameras aren’t pointed at you. Want support our troops and their families, Mike, how about a big donation to the MFRC.
