Maxime, my good friend, Since you have publicly written your thoughts, I must correct you - with all due respect. In NO way, shape or form have we ever suggested that a political person in the Gov’t should interfere in a judicial case.  That said, the case should be immediately dropped. I have said publicly these are separate but VERY connected issues.  One issue is the case. It should be dropped because of obvious reasons. This prosecution is selective. There are thousands of safe qualified mohel procedures performed in Belgium regularly. So, why this time, why these 3 mohels, why in Antwerp the great Diaspora of beautiful Jewish families here in Belgium, and why this case now. It begs the question. It’s the chicken and the egg story.  Which comes first. It is ABSOLUTELY an issue of antisemitism. You either have to make a change to the procedural accreditation or you have to call prosecution of these three beautiful religiously qualified and wonderful men anti-semeitc. No other way around it! I went to see your colleague Frank - the Minister of Health. He was very rude and was quite obnoxious. I was told he does not like my great President.   That said, I tried to convince him to make a simple revision to the accreditation process as is the case in America and in civilized countries like Germany. Belgium is most certainly a civilized country. This would do two things. It would allow Jewish families to be permitted this religious procedure and secondly it would immediately force the case to be dropped - because there would longer be a “violation”. Frank told us he wanted to wait to see a resolution of the case. In my opinion, this is also an antisemitic decision. Either way it’s anti semitic.  The prosecution and the decision not to adjust the accreditation process. My publicly calling for this procedure to be accepted is my duty. It’s something my President, my government, dozens of fellow Ambassador’s to Beglium have asked my help with too, and it’s something my moral center demands of me to do.  As a devout Catholic, I am also someone who will always fight for the religious freedoms of my Jewish brothers and sisters - ESPECIALLY when their rights are at risk as is the case here. Changing this law is something EVERY Jewish person in Belgium is screaming for (thousands have reached me today) and it’s a right which your Jewish Belgium citizens, their families and their many strong supporters deserve immediately.  Other people’s interpretation that I am somehow asking the government to interfere in a judicial procedure is a political attempt to distract from the facts at hand. I hope you will correct your wording above because I will always respond when something is untrue and inaccurate. I have great respect for you and think you are doing a GREAT job as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foriegn Affairs. I know you have great respect for me as well. We have told each other this repeatedly and we both mean it sincerely. We have and will continue to get very important things done together that further strengthen our already great relationship between Belgium and the United States of America. That said Belgium needs to lead and to stop equivocating about this issue.  It’s not ok to simply say we “follow the law” and “we are not antisemitic”. Both of those things can’t be true in this case. The process must be changed if you are not anti-semeitc.  You may condemn my pure intentions as you wish and you may also defend your very rude colleague. That is your prerogative.  Belgium must change this procedure and it must also drop the case NOW so these men can have their lives back. Both are two very SEPARATE but INTRICATELY connected issues.  I pray for the three mohels and their families. I will go to Antwerp to meet with them as soon as I can to help them in anyway I can.
