I understand Vessel MV #Kathrin, carrying a 150-metric-ton shipment of military-grade explosives destined for Israel's largest defence contractor, has docked in the port of Alexandria and may soon continue its journey. I implore the government of #Egypt to act and stop the vessel from advancing. At a time when Israel is committing acts of genocide against the Palestinians (a risk recognised by the ICJ earlier this year), the ICJ has reiterated that States are under a legal obligation “to respect and to ensure respect” for the Genocide Convention “in all circumstances,” including ”international obligations relating to the transfer of arms to parties to an armed conflict.” Imposing an arms embargo on Israel is critical, as also recalled by both the Human Rights Council and UNGA. This is not just a moral duty, but a critical legal obligation to prevent further atrocities. We must preserve the primacy of int'l law and human rights, lest we lose them when we need them most.
