The fool who under infatuation believes that a particular beautiful woman has fallen in love with him becomes her slave and ultimately dances to her tunes like a bird tied to a string.

Who doesn't grow arrogant by becoming rich? When could indulgence end grief? Which man has not been overcome by a woman? Who is always loved by a king? Who has not been overcome by time? Which beggar has attained glory? Who has become happy by contracting the vices of the wicked?

No one has ever seen or heard of any golden deer nor it was ever created, still behold the craving of Lord Rama! Indeed one’s wisdom fails at the onset of the evil days.

When other people give praise, even the virtueless may acquire some status, but if even Indra (the lord of the gods) starts praising his own virtues, he will belittle his stature. [Self praise lowers your value.]

One whose knowledge is confined to books and whose wealth is in the possession of others, can use neither his knowledge nor wealth when the need for them arises.

There are two nectarean fruits hanging from the tree of this world: one is the hearing of sweet words, and the other, the companionship of saintly men.

Sweet words satisfy everyone. Hence all must be sweet in their language. The excessive use of sweet words does not render anyone poor.

It is better to die than to preserve life by incurring disgrace. The loss of life causes but a moment's grief, but disgrace brings grief every day of one's life.

A blade of grass is light, cotton is lighter, and a beggar is even lighter than that. The why then does the wind not carry him away? Because it fears that the beggar may start begging something from it as well.

All sacrifice and charities bring only temporary results, but that charity which is given to a deserving person survives forever.

Virtues shine more when they are present in a noble and wise person, like a gem which aspires to be embedded in gold.

If not given a proper patronage and support, even the virtuous gets distressed. No matter how blemish-less the gem, it needs a base to shine from.

I do not want wealth which has been attained by saddening someone, or by immoral means, or by seeking the shelter of enemies.
