I've been working in policy for about 8 years and it's striking how uninterested the field is with economics. To the extent that economists get invited, it's to justify existing bad ideas ex post. The only exception is maybe central banking. I think part of it is policymakers and policy researchers don't really have skin in the game. Whereas when I worked in law, you could bet that any competition litigation would involve hordes of economists,with their models and assumptions constantly stress-tested in adversarial proceedings. In contrast, policy crowds operate in environments where the costs of being wrong are diffuse and long-term, while the benefits of telling decision-makers what they want to hear can be immediate.

People leaving regular companies: Time for a change! Excited for my next chapter! People leaving AI companies: I have gazed into the endless night and there are shapes out there. We must be kind to one another. I am moving on to study philosophy.
