@NewsLionSA Enforcing immigration laws is not xenophobia. Every country regulates who enters and works within its borders. South Africa can welcome visitors, students and investors while still expecting its laws to be respected. Those two positions are not contradictory.

South Africa is about to learn an expensive lesson for its anti-immigration attitude, according to Pan-African scholar P.L.O. Lumumba. He predicts growing tensions will have serious economic consequences, particularly for the country's tourism, higher education and international reputation. Lumumba reckons hostility towards fellow Africans is not only morally wrong but also economically self-destructive. He warns that if Africans increasingly feel unwelcome in South Africa, they will simply take their tourism spending, university enrolments and business investments elsewhere. #Lumumba #Politics #SApolitics #migrants #tourism #PanAfricanism #AfricaWakeUp #AfricaRise #Travel #Immigration

@ntsikimazwai Funny how people have been predicting doom for Black South Africans for decades, yet we’re still here, still building, still progressing. The real nightmare is underestimating people who have survived and overcome far worse.

@RonaldRikhotso1 @SABCNews SABC is supposed to cover issues that affect South Africans. Whether you agree with Jacinta or not, she has become part of a major national debate, so media coverage comes with that.

@matigary @CyrilRamaphosa Or more sarcastic: A Zimbabwean calling out South African leadership is like a passenger on the Titanic criticizing another ship’s navigation. Focus on getting your own house in order first. 😅

There is a tragic failure of leadership in South Africa. @CyrilRamaphosa is a fencepost tortoise
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus@DrTedros

It is profoundly heartbreaking to witness another surge of xenophobic violence in #SouthAfrica this week. Hundreds have marched on Parliament, thousands of families have been displaced, and lives have been tragically cut short. These include at least five Ethiopians killed earlier in the attacks, and five Mozambicans who died in Mossel Bay. Thousands more are now fleeing for their lives. To see South Africa turn to xenophobia is a tragic betrayal of the country's struggle for independence and freedom. African nations stood united to dismantle apartheid. Ethiopia proudly supported "Madiba," Nelson Mandela, in 1962 and issued him a passport so he could travel the continent. Other countries helped in many ways, including with political and financial support. Disagreements and grievances must be addressed by the justice system and the rule of law, never through vigilante violence and collective punishment. South Africa deserves better. Africa deserves better. Stop the hate. Protect the vulnerable. Uphold our shared humanity.

Calling for sanctions on South Africa while benefiting from South Africa’s economy is quite a contradiction. Every country has the right to enforce its immigration laws. Respecting borders and the rule of law is not xenophobia. If South Africa is such an apartheid and xenophobic country, why are millions of Africans still choosing to come here instead of countries that claim to be more welcoming?

South Africans are xenophobic. They must not pretend to not be. Cancel their economic interests. The continent must start imposing a sanctions regime on that apartheid and xenophobic country

@yabbanx If South Africans are so lazy, why do people from across Africa keep coming here to study, work, invest, and do business? It’s possible to celebrate the success of Nigerians and Ghanaians without insulting millions of South Africans.

South Africans hate our guts. They don't understand why they are poor in their own country whilst Nigerians, Ghanaians etc live lavishly. Bro, laziness doesn't bring food to the table.

If 80% of South Africans supposedly have the reading ability of a Grade 4 pupil, it’s remarkable that South Africa still manages to produce internationally recognized scientists, engineers, doctors, entrepreneurs, authors, and professionals who contribute across the world. Broad insults make for easy tweets, but they don’t make for serious analysis.

Dear Xenophobic South Africans 🇿🇦, For those of you who foolishly think you don’t have your people in other countries, and that even if you do, they are all staying there legally, On March 1, 2026, 63 South Africans were deported from Ireland to South Africa. This operation was carried out by the Garda National Immigration Bureau. 10 (~16%) of the deportees were convicted of offences in Ireland. This is how civilised countries handle illegal immigration. The country doesn’t allow citizens to behave like animals, go around beating up anyone who doesn’t speak their language, loot their shops, and dehumanise them, as is happening in South Africa. rte.ie/news/ireland/2… independent.co.uk/news/world/eur…

@kgoatlapa @Sthembile1993 @F_Edzeamey When your argument requires comparing an entire population to a gorilla, you’ve already run out of facts. South Africa has plenty of problems, but reducing millions of diverse people to an IQ score says more about your bias than it does about South Africans.

I always tell the truth, even when I lie ... 1. Global average IQ: 100 (people need 'do not drink' warning labels on bleach packaging) 2. You need IQ 89 to clean toilets competently 3. IQ 80 is the threshold for mental retardation and impairment 4. SA's average IQ is 68.87, and Koko the gorilla scored 84 in an IQ test biased towards humans If you were wondering why the average SAn doesn't know that red means stop, pavements are not lanes, traffic lights need maintaining and weeds need weeding ... Dumb fucks.

@kgoatlapa @Prince_Luyd @F_Edzeamey The irony is that you’re using highly disputed IQ claims to make sweeping judgments about an entire nation of over 60 million people. That’s not intelligence; that’s prejudice dressed up as statistics.

@MrJamesKe Freedom of movement, investment, and legal migration work both ways. South Africans living and doing business across Africa are expected to respect the laws of their host countries, just as foreigners in South Africa are expected to respect South African laws.

Before telling other Africans to leave SA, it is worth remembering that over 100,000 South Africans live, work, and run businesses across other African countries, and there are also SA companies operating widely across the continent. What applies to others should apply equally to them. We are also waiting for the 30th of June!

@dranthoniaeddo @thenanaaba Calling people “delusional” doesn’t strengthen your argument. A truly educated person debates facts, not stereotypes about an entire country. If education produced this level of arrogance and generalization, then perhaps your country should review its curriculum too.

Calling South Africans lazy while benefiting from opportunities in South Africa is not the compliment some people think it is. South Africans built this country, maintain its institutions, and have every right to expect their interests to be respected. Appreciating immigrants should never require insulting citizens.
