Court rules in favour of ANC Joburg chair Loyiso Masuku in defamation case Newly elected African National Congress (ANC) Johannesburg regional chairperson Loyiso Masuku (pictured) has scored a legal victory in a high‑profile defamation battle, with the Gauteng High Court ruling in her favour in an urgent defamation application. Masuku brought the case against Phapano Phasha, a well‑known political commentator and former ANC member, after remarks made on a podcast alleging that Masuku was part of a “PPE cartel” and had “bought” votes to secure her leadership win over rival Dada Morero. The court found the statements to be unlawful and reckless, ordering the immediate removal of the offending podcast content and a full retraction and apology from Phasha. The ruling also restrains Phasha from further publishing the defamatory claims, with costs awarded against her. The question of damages will be addressed later in oral evidence. Masuku’s election as ANC Johannesburg chair drew significant attention amid internal party tensions and persistent discussions about money politics at elective conferences. The defamation case underscored the broader debate around factionalism and integrity within party structures, but the court’s decision affirms the legal protections against unfounded allegations in South Africa’s political discourse.

@ClickMediaCorp_ the Loyiso Masuku judgment is less about politics and more about accountability, evidence, and the limits of online speech.
