.@UConnMBB freshman Braylon Mullins was Indiana's Mr. Basketball coming out of high school and had a lot of options. But his dad, Braylon’s high school coach, knew playing for Dan Hurley was the right place for him. A win in the Elite 8 would secure a return trip to Indiana for Mullins.

Everybody wants toughness… until toughness gets uncomfortable. Hard coaching isn’t abuse.
Hard coaching is correction.
Hard coaching is standards.
Hard coaching is loving a kid enough not to let him stay average. If a coach is demanding effort, detail, toughness, and accountability bothers you… that probably says more about today’s culture than it does the coach.

I asked Dan Hurley the same question I asked Tom Izzo: why does the media have a problem with coaches coaching players hard? Hurley: "Society has gotten soft in a lot of ways... The real world is tough and cruel... I'm preparing my players for life."

I’ve saved this clip from 2024. Maybe you’re a parent that needs to hear it now and maybe you’re a parent that needs to bookmark it for later to come back to. Either way if you have watched your child sacrifice the norms to not be of the norm and watched them fall short you can relate. For those that aren’t at this level yet- remember every match/game/point is big to them in moment and I think we minimize that thinking we are helping them when in reality we are protecting our own self from the hurt we feel when our child is hurting. Struggle and failure are life’s biggest teaching tools. They are also some of the most painful to go through, but more so to watch someone you love go through. I hope this helps some parents- now or in the future or even those parents of kids at the younger ages. Hopefully you focus on building healthy relationships with your kids over their win loss record. Hopefully you are praising them not only in their successes, but also in their failures of trying so they continue to just that- try.

@emilyaustin Calipari is the one that started the downfall of college hoops with one and done. Other than when he was at UMass he has never developed players. The playing field is fully level and this guy is crying about it. The college game is forever ruined.

Coach John Calipari is absolutely spot on here. Why would a coach recruit and develop an American high school kid for 4 years when the system now rewards grabbing ready-made pros from overseas, the G League, or the NBA pipeline? If we don’t fix this, we’re killing the entire purpose of college sports.

Parents: Sometimes the best thing you can do is NOT rescue your kid. Don’t fight their battles. Don’t chase playing time. Help them build a work ethic, communicate, and let them struggle forward. That growth ends up mattering way more than any score. It prepares them for life.
