once you realize someone isn’t actually seeing you & that they’ve created a version of you that isn’t real, you stop trying to correct it. you leave them with what they’ve chosen to see & you don’t let it touch you.

Charles Henry Turner, a pioneer in animal behavior research, discovered that insects could distinguish pitch, that cockroaches can learn by trial and error and that honeybees can see color. Born in 1867, Turner showed academic excellence early in life and went on to earn a PhD in zoology in 1907, becoming one of the first Black Americans to achieve this in the sciences. Despite his qualifications, he was denied opportunities to work at major universities due to racial discrimination. Instead, he spent most of his career teaching at high schools, continuing his research independently. At the time, many scientists believed insects operated purely on instinct, with no real ability to learn, remember, or process information. Turner challenged this idea through observation and experimentation. He conducted studies showing that insects were capable of more complex behavior than previously assumed. He demonstrated that cockroaches could learn through trial and error, meaning they could adapt based on experience rather than just instinct. He also found that insects could distinguish differences in pitch, suggesting they could respond to sound in more advanced ways than expected. One of his most important contributions involved honeybees. Turner showed that bees could see and respond to color, which helped explain how they locate flowers and navigate their environment. This was an early contribution to the study of insect vision and behavior, a field that would grow significantly in later years. Turner published dozens of scientific papers, often without the institutional support given to his peers. His work laid the groundwork for future research in animal cognition and behavior, even though he did not receive the recognition he deserved during his lifetime.
