As an AD, I remind my coaches if your top athlete’s lack of effort is negatively impacting the team more than their ability is contributing, it is time to make a change. Effort is non negotiable. Holding that standard will elevate your team, reinforce your culture, and send a clear message about expectations.

Your culture is not the highest standard you preach, it is the lowest standard you allow. Preach the standard, live the standard, hold others accountable to the standard.

As an AD, make it a priority to get out of your office and build real relationships. Let your athletes see that you’re approachable, human, and there to support them. Celebrate their successes, encourage them through failures, and consistently show that you care.
