You can learn a lot about a sports parent by how they watch a game. The best ones? No drama. No complaining. No yelling at refs. No badmouthing coaches. They’re just grateful to watch their child play. Youth sports need more of that.

Curt Cignetti said something every coach should hear: Up 52–7 in the 4th quarter… The standard doesn’t change. I broke down 10 principles behind that mindset and what they mean for team culture. Read it here 👇 gregberge.beehiiv.com/p/10-culture-s…

“Save seats in the stadium for family”
Jim Shapiro@jimshapiro

In other breaking news, my contract with @KingsHSFootball has been renewed. I still get to manage all the equipment, organize the strength and speed program, make sure someone can run the game day camera, save seats in the stadium for family, and make sure the garbage cans are emptied after home games. In return I get to retain the naming rights to the football shed at the field, fight over the coaches parking stall, and get a free hotdog after each home game. Let’s go!!

If you look back on the sidelines after a close win & see pouty faces, that’s a sign of outside pressure about playing time. When the focus shifts from team success to individual minutes, the experience changes. External pressure steals joy. Let them enjoy the experience of team.

Successful programs don’t exist because thier kids are magically different. Kids haven’t fundamentally changed. What separates consistently successful programs across Texas is community alignment. In places that win year after year, football is not just a team activity — it’s a community standard. Parents reinforce expectations at home. Businesses support the program. The town celebrates discipline, effort, and accountability. The message players hear at practice is the same message they hear at dinner, in classrooms, and around town. When that alignment exists, athletes understand that buying into the culture isn’t optional. It becomes the norm. The environment shapes behavior long before a coach ever blows a whistle.

Average players: 1. Let things happen 2. Accept mediocrity on their team 3. Succumb to peer pressure Exceptional players: 1. Choose to lead 2. Raise the standards for the team 3. Hold their teammates accountable Choose wisely.
