I received a request for three days of bereavement leave from our senior data analyst. In the notes, she mentioned her grandmother had passed away. I scheduled a brief touchbase to review our familial proximity guidelines. I explained that while grandmothers are of course family, our handbook only classifies them as Tier 2 relatives. Tier 2 relatives only qualify for one day of paid grieving. She started crying and said the funeral is out of state. I handed her a tissue and reminded her that geographical distance does not alter corporate policy. She asked how she was supposed to travel, mourn, and return in 24 hours. I told her she could utilize her PTO, but her balance was currently at zero. I suggested she attend the service virtually to demonstrate her commitment the company. I logged "struggles with emotional compartmentalization" in her file. RIP her granny.

People need to go back to sex education : Contracting herpes (HSV) from someone spitting in your food is theoretically possible but highly unlikely. The herpes simplex virus is fragile. It typically dies quickly when exposed to air, temperature changes, and digestive stomach acids. It is primarily spread through direct skin-to-skin contact with infected areas or sores. The transmission risk is low for the following reasons: The Environment: The virus does not survive well for long periods on inanimate surfaces or in food. Digestion: If the virus is swallowed, stomach acid and enzymes generally neutralize it before it can establish an infection. The Route: Transmission normally requires direct contact with an active blister or exchange of saliva during activities like kissing

A colleague of mine built an entire dashboard from scratch that leadership used in every board meeting for two years. It was never mentioned in her performance reviews. The manager who presented it to the board got a promotion.

Why Boomers think PTO is a privilege: 1. They barely used theirs. 2. Vacation guilt was the culture. 3. Being present meant being loyal. 4. They answered emails on holiday and called it dedication. 5. Rest made them nervous.

YouTube denied me both the 100,000 and 1 million subscriber plaques a few years ago, so I checked today to see if I could get them again. It seems I can't even get past the eligibility check. It gets stuck right at the 15% mark. It kind of sucks because it was one of my big goals since I started YouTube, even before my scambait channel… back in 2012 or so.

The Pause Award recognizes a photograph that does something increasingly rare—it makes people stop. In a world of endless scrolling and fleeting attention, this image held its ground and invited a closer look. Whether through its mood, composition, timing, or subtle details, it created a moment that encouraged viewers to stay a little longer. This award celebrates the power of a photograph to capture attention without demanding it, reminding us that some of the most impactful images aren't the loudest—they're the ones that quietly linger in our minds long after we've seen them. Avoiding office small talk is OK. Preferring to communicate over email is OK. Not wanting to socialise at the Christmas party is OK. What is not OK is being made to feel like a problem because of it.

Americans are uniting against data centers. Liberals and conservatives rarely agree on anything. But across the United States, they are increasingly finding common ground on one issue: opposition to data centers. According to recent reporting and polling, resistance to new data center projects is emerging in communities across the political spectrum. Residents in both Republican-leaning and Democratic-leaning areas are raising concerns about the facilities that power artificial intelligence, cloud computing, social media, and much of the modern internet. The reason is simple. AI may feel digital, but the infrastructure behind it is profoundly physical. Modern data centers can span hundreds of thousands or even millions of square feet and contain thousands of servers operating around the clock. Together, those servers consume enormous amounts of electricity while generating large quantities of heat that must be removed through industrial-scale cooling systems. As AI models become more powerful, their demand for computing power continues to grow. Training advanced AI systems can require trillions of calculations, prompting technology companies to build larger facilities and secure more energy, water, and land. For many communities, that expansion is raising difficult questions. Residents have voiced concerns about electricity demand, water consumption, noise pollution, traffic, environmental impacts, and changes to local landscapes. Some proposed facilities are larger than dozens of football fields combined. What's striking is that these concerns are appearing in places that often disagree on almost everything else. In an era of deep political polarization, opposition to data centers has become one of the rare issues attracting support from both liberals and conservatives. Supporters argue that data centers bring investment, tax revenue, jobs, and technological leadership. They also note that many companies are investing in renewable energy and more efficient cooling systems. Critics counter that local communities often bear the environmental and infrastructure costs while receiving relatively few long-term benefits.
