Everyone knows monarchs depend on milkweed, but so do over 450 other species of insects. Butterflies, beetles, wasps, flies, and bees all depend on it. That's why every garden should have at least 5 native milkweed plants. Grow it for all of them.

Hairy Beardtongue is a ridiculous name for a plant, but it's out there saving endangered species. Early spring is a starvation period for pollinators. They emerge from winter before most flowers are blooming. The nectar gap is real and it kills colonies. Hairy Beardtongue (Penstemon hirsutus) blooms in late spring, earlier than most native perennials, filling exactly that gap. Newly hatched bumblebees depend on it. It hosts a specialist mason bee, Osmia distincta, that uses almost nothing else. It's a larval host for the Baltimore Checkerspot butterfly and 12 other species of moths and butterflies, including the threatened Saunders' Sallow Moth. It also thrives in poor, dry, rocky soil where almost nothing else will grow. Deer won't touch it. It comes back every year. It spreads slowly without taking over. It does all of this while being named Hairy Beardtongue. Native to eastern North America. Easy to find at native plant nurseries this time of year. Plant it once and it feeds pollinators for decades.

We need to talk a bit about how utterly absurd the March heatwave was in the USA. This heatwave would have been impossible without a boost from climate change, but even with climate change it remains a deeply unlikely event. A thread looking at some of the numbers. ๐Ÿงต

We are rapidly unaliving ourselves, pressing the fast-forward button on extinction. It's beyond our definitions of insanity. It's not a "win for mining," it's a loss for every life form on Earth that won't survive the loss of glaciers, including the badly misnamed Homo sapiens.
Drop Site@DropSiteNews

๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ท Milei Opens Argentinaโ€™s Glaciers to Mining in Win for BHP, Glencore and Lundin Argentinaโ€™s Congress voted 137-111 Thursday to gut the countryโ€™s 2010 Glacier Law, handing a major victory to President Javier Milei and the global mining industry after nearly 12 hours of debate and thousands of protesters outside parliament. ๐Ÿ”นThe projects most immediately unlocked include the Vicuรฑa joint venture between BHP, the worldโ€™s largest miner, and Lundin Mining, the Vancouver-based mining group, along with Glencore, one of the worldโ€™s largest raw materials traders, and its El Pachรณn copper project in Argentinaโ€™s San Juan province near the Chilean border. ๐Ÿ”นEl Pachรณn alone carries a $9.5 billion price tag and had been delayed by glacier protection rules. U.S. mining entrepreneur Rob McEwen copper venture is also expected to benefit through its Los Azules project, one of Argentinaโ€™s largest undeveloped copper deposits. Mining sector estimates say the new framework could unlock more than $30 billion in investment over the next decade, with 70% earmarked for copper, gold and silver. ๐Ÿ”นThe key shift: the reform strips a federal scientific body of its authority to designate protected glaciers, handing that power to provincial governments โ€” most of which are pro-mining. ๏ฟผ Critics say provinces will simply greenlight any glacier that stands in the way of extraction. ๐Ÿ”นIn the northwest, where mining is concentrated, glacial reserves have already shrunk 17% in the last decade. ๏ฟผ Environmental lawyers warned the reform threatens the water supply of 70% of Argentinians. ๐Ÿ”นEnvironmental groups have vowed to challenge the law in court. Milei, who does not believe in man-made climate change, replied: โ€œEnvironmentalists would rather see us starve than have anything touched.โ€
