It's January 2024. You're a game developer that has worked on a game for the past twelve months. You built on Unity. You wake up to them announcing a fee per install. Feels bad. Does it actually affect AAA games or smaller game studios? 👇 TLDR: smaller studios are more affected at first sight. ''Games qualify for the Unity Runtime Fee after two criteria have been met: 1) the game has passed a minimum revenue threshold in the last 12 months, and 2) the game has passed a minimum lifetime install count.'' Great, this means especially large game studios will pay and smaller studios can still scale, right? NO. Check the attached fee chart. Imagine being a smaller game studio. You have >100,000 downloads, revenue is starting to flow in. You now have additional expenses to Unity. Costs are much higher compared to AAA studios that easily scale above the 1M threshold , have a existing fan base that is willing to buy things in the game. Cost to break-even is higher for the smaller studios, scaling is slowed down and risks are higher. Good comment by @NicoThePico: Imagine you bought a game. You want to play on various devices. You have to install the game per device. The developer now has to pay fees multiple times for one user. Confirmed here: x.com/stephentotilo/… Unity Plus is being retired, making access to advanced features require at least a $2k annual subscription, a significant increase from Unity Plus. Conclusion: There's a lot of discussions happening around this topic at the moment. There's still quite some unclarity around different aspects. Pretty sure Unity team is reading feedback/discussions, so let's see if unanswered questions will be answered and if they are going to make any adjustments at all.
