On the topic of how one can make a game with portals and platform + puzzle elements and escape the shadow of Portal... (my) Answer: I don't think you can. Aesthetic and narrative aside (and this is huge to the success of Portal), there's nothing more unique about portals as a puzzle mechanic. It is unique by its nature. (and again, it's huge to the success to Portal.) It is multi-dimensionally iconic. So to create a first-person, puzzle-platformer with portals that *isn't* (the) Portal, you may swap out the aesthetic, narrative, and additional features + polish. But at its core, if it's within the vague genre, comparison to Portal will be *practically* inescapable. It's multi-iconic, unique, and the first of its kind: a *benchmark* in -game mechanics-, as Crysis (also 2007) was to rendering/graphics. Are moving portals and anti-gravity enough? What does it take to differentiate the mechanics significantly, without moving away from the (physics-based) puzzle-platformer genre?

How do you make a game with portals and puzzles mechanics, without ending up with Valve's Portal (2007)? This is an excellent point of discussion, and one I prefer over typical gaming industry drama. The video games themselves, the actual medium and thing. The technology and mechanics, not just the superficial skin and makeup-- this is what I want to learn about. Because it's so useful, all this technique and knowledge, and understanding. To just waste [entirely] it on passive entertainment and arguing with each other about that, don't you think? And thinking about these things, you learn so much of the real world. How does light work? And sound? Not just theoretically, but in application. Volumetric rendering, rays, refraction, reflection, and waves. Colours, even time. And what about the physics of moving portals, reference frames, the universe, reality? It's all in one place, to dissect and understand.

it is sort of crazy that portal 1 + 2 are basically the most successful games of all time and we don't actually see a lot of portal-likes popping up cool to see new development exploring that mechanic
