In the hierarchy of the heavens, Jupiter has ever been regarded as the benign sovereign, enthroned amidst the firmament as the bringer of expansion, wisdom, and magnanimity. To the mystic, Jupiter is the cosmic archetype of law and kingship, not tyrannical but paternal, guiding with justice rather than compulsion. He is the reflection in the heavens of that eternal Idea whereby order is maintained, whereby harmony outbalances chaos. In the temple of initiation he is the Master’s staff, the Word that reassures, the broad arch under which the pilgrim may pass from narrowness into breadth of spirit. Thus in astrology, alchemy, and the Mysteries alike, Jupiter signifies that enlargement of being by which man, lifting his eyes to the heavens, perceives that abundance is not material only, but spiritual: an inheritance of wisdom, order, and divine benevolence.
