@Bow_B4_BJJ Similar to a promotion in a job you get the belt and the next day there isn’t much change. It takes a long time to establish yourself at blue, I’m on year 3 and it feels like recently I was able to put everything together without pausing to think

I asked a couple brown belts at our gym, What is the main reason lots of athletes don’t make it through Blue and get to purple belt? The answers varied, for the people who have made it through, why do you think they quit?

@DSackaroff it starts vague like “i want to work on wrestling” and then from there you start to build tasks around it get connected to the hips legs or neck force destabilization all the way to full takedowns

Something I’ve changed in the way I work as I’ve grown is that I no longer set goals based on input. When I was younger, I’d aim to write X words per day or train X hours per day. I read about the word counts of famous authors and the grapplers who were on a mat for 6 hours per day, and I thought that progress was directly tied to volume. This approach led to progress at first because of the sheer volume and time accumulated, but it didn’t lead to development in specific areas. I also got burned out a lot and often felt frustrated with my progress. Now, I approach everything based on tasks. I have a to-do list of work tasks for the day. I have a to-do list of training tasks for each practice. Creating this kind of structure for yourself is honestly pretty easy (like a few minutes per day, tops), but the benefit over 3-6 months is more than worth it. This helps me pace myself better and avoid burnout, but it also helps me avoid mindless training and working. It's also easier to track progress when you have measurable tasks to track. Everything you want to do well needs to be done intentionally.
