it's 4am and i'm reading my city's zoning code and in residential zones you can have a detached garage but not a detached dwelling unit. your car can have its own building but your mother-in-law cannot. we have codified a legal hierarchy where vehicles outrank humans. i'm fine

metro was literally built for automatic train operation in 1976 and ran it for 33 years. they turned it off after the 2009 crash, fixed the problem, and the union still spent 15 years acting like automation was an experimental technology invented last tuesday

This is why Skyline is an infinitely better investment that almost all road widening projects the state could ever do, even if more costly. Mass transit combined with micromobility is the only way cities around the world have been able to efficiently move mass amounts of people.

Even if those main roads were also widened, more lanes and more traffic would mean longer waits at intersections, which is where traffic piles up. It’s an endless chicken-and-egg game that will only end when you remove what’s causing the problem in the first place: cars. 6/🧵
