This appointment is deeply insulting to every woman who has suffered with endometriosis. Endometriosis is a painful, chronic condition that affects women’s reproductive systems, something no trans women can ever experience. Appointing Steph Richards, a 73-year-old trans woman who was born male, as parliamentary engagement officer for Endometriosis South Coast is tone-deaf and dismissive of women’s lived reality. Novelist Amanda Craig, who has endured severe endometriosis herself, put it perfectly: it’s as ridiculous as white people speaking for Black people. Representation in women’s health should be led by those who actually understand the condition from personal experience, not by someone who can never share that reality. Women have fought hard for proper recognition and funding for female-specific health issues. This kind of decision erodes trust in the charity and tells suffering women that their pain and their biology don’t matter. Endometriosis South Coast should reconsider this appointment and prioritise authentic female voices. Women deserve better.
