The new build estates on the outskirts of Cambridge are truly shocking. Is it any wonder that people there hate the thought of expanding the city when this is what they can expect will be built?

@pirateboy75 @KateFantom How big is the roof? And what’s the typical consumption on the house? These are important factors in sizing.

Chatting to my neighbour today. I was gobsmacked when he said they’d been paying £270pcm for their gas and electricity bills. For 8 months of the year we’re completely protected from spiralling petrol/diesel/gas/electric costs by producing our own energy and storing it in a battery. For the other 4 months of the year the battery allows us to power shift, utilising very cheap off-peak energy. Based on the average mpg of a diesel (43mpg) and the current £1.60 per litre, this equates to cost of 16p per mile. This means that each kWh we produce (EV average of 4 miles per kWh) is worth around 64p when we put it directly in to our EV as we are doing today and will continue to do throughout the year. If you can, do it. It will save you.

13/3/96 a man walked into Dunblane Primary School and shot dead 16 pupils and their teacher. Worst mass-shooting in UK history. As a result of public/political pressure, a Law was introduced to Ban Private Ownership of Handguns. Farage says Ban is 'ludicrous' Farage is SCUM.

Trump’s little ambassadors. All day long. Standing up for the draft dodger who said our forces avoided the front line. Campaigning on grooming gangs while ignoring the rape claims against Trump. Taking top dollar to slag off the UK at every turn. If that is patriotism I’d love to know what treason looks like.

Nigel Farage, the front runner to be the next British Prime Minister, is meeting with President Trump today. Time to sink Keir Starmer’s ghastly Chagos surrender deal for good. @Nigel_Farage

The same people that are nostalgic for when every village had a butcher, a baker, a greengrocer, a school and a GP are now outraged by 15 minute cities. Make it make sense.

I genuinely cannot understand how generation above me ended up here. We grew up idolising David Bowie and through him discovered Lou Reed and Iggy Pop. We lived through punk and post punk smashing gender norms in public. We watched Prince blur masculinity and desire. We danced to Boy George. We worshipped Grace Jones. Then came the flamboyance of the eighties where androgyny excess and self invention were celebrated. Gender bending was not a threat. It was art. It was freedom. It was cool. So how did the same generation become so hostile to people simply existing outside rigid boxes. How did we go from celebrating difference to fearing it. This backlash does not come from culture or history. It comes from forgetting who we were and what we stood for. None of this is new. Get over it.

As Israel have been allowed to compete in Eurovision 2026, the UK must follow in the footsteps of Ireland, Spain, Slovenia and the Netherlands and boycott the competition. The world's largest live music event cannot be used to whitewash Israel's ongoing genocide in Gaza.

Let's talk user interfaces. The one on the left is excellent; the one on the right is an abomination. I saw the one on the left for the first time yesterday. One dial for time, one for power. My whole life I have only seen the kind on the right, full of features no one uses, so complicated that all anyone ever does is figure out how to add a few minutes and hit start, or mash "add 30" over and over. The one on the right is so complex, that I've never seen anyone else, other than me, ever use the power setting. Some models make you set the power level before the time, some models make you set it after entering the time. One wrong move and it errors out. Almost no one ever figures out how to set the weight of the food, which must also be entered in some precise sequence amidst the other settings, rendering the defrost settings mostly unused. Even the time function is ambiguous. Want a minute and a half? You can type in 90 or 130. You'd be amazed how many people don't even know that. Go ahead, ask your spouse or friends. For all this functionality that no one uses, the one on the right requires an 8-bit microcontroller running at 1–8 MHz with a few KB of flash and RAM. The one on the left uses an analog control system — mechanical timers and rotary switches with no microcontroller at all, or at most a very small, discrete IC. The one on the right is a waste of resources and wasted human attention spent in bewilderment, for the mistaken dream of precision microwave operation that no human has the time for or aspires to. The one on the left looks cheaper (it is, in the best sense) and less capable, but actually perfectly meets the user's context and actually enables them to intuitively choose a power intensity, unlocking superior cooking/heating performance, while the power setting remains obscure and unused for the vast majority with the absurdly "more capable" unit on the right. Probably no one reading this is in the microwave business, but there's still a lesson in here for just about anyone building anything for anyone to use.

Imagine living in a country where its stupidest people get invited to spout ill-informed nonsense on national radio, while millions of intelligent actual experts are systematically ignored and marginalised. Our country's become a fucking joke, where ignorance is celebrated.

The lady at the charity shop today told me that she wishes people would clear out their children's old toys in the lead up to Christmas rather than after because she always sees a number of parents in the days before Christmas looking for toys for their little ones who might be strapped for cash. She said there's very rarely anything in just before, but that they get inundated with toys in the days after. And it really made me think about it in a way I never would have before. If you know your child is going to get lots of presents from Father Christmas this year, by clearing out your cupboards a few days early, you could make another child's Christmas a lot more special too. Saw this & thought I'd repost.

@g__j So sad to see faith in institutions is failing due to things like this, creating such distrust, resentment, anger. Specifically on this - pour a single coffee down a drain and you are prosecuted, but release thousands of tons of shit into rivers = £ billions for shareholders? 🤷‍♂️

Stuff like this kills faith in institutions. Whatever the technicalities, fining someone for coffee down a drain is just ridiculous. Drains take all the detritus from roads, rubbish, dog pee etc. The Council should just drop it rather than digging deeper. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…
