Gettysburg’s Heroines: Women Who Shaped Our History
First Lady Mamie Eisenhower made Gettysburg her home for many years, and we wouldn’t want to let Women’s History Month pass without honoring her legacy.
Celebrated for her elegant style and gracious hospitality, Mamie served as first lady from 1953 to 1961 alongside her husband, President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
This 1948 portrait of Mamie, painted by Thomas E. Stephens, can be seen in the formal living room of the Eisenhower National Historic Site in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania—just one of many personal pieces preserved within the Eisenhowers’ home.

Gettysburg’s Heroines: Women Who Shaped Our History
Six months pregnant and with her husband serving in the Union Army, Elizabeth Thorn faced the overwhelming aftermath of the Battle of Gettysburg alone. As caretaker of Evergreen Cemetery, she buried more than 100 fallen soldiers in the days following the fighting.
Her strength and resilience during one of Gettysburg’s darkest chapters remain an extraordinary testament to the women who held their communities together.
This #WomensHistoryMonth, we honor Elizabeth’s quiet heroism. 🌿

Gettysburg’s Heroines: Women Who Shaped Our History
Mary Virginia “Jennie” Wade was just 20 years old when the Battle of Gettysburg started. On July 3, 1863, while baking bread for Union soldiers, she was struck by a stray bullet — becoming the only civilian killed during the battle.
Her story is a solemn reminder that war reaches far beyond the battlefield and into the homes of everyday citizens.
This #WomensHistoryMonth, we remember Jennie and the civilians whose lives were forever changed in July 1863.
