昔、私が書いた数値流体力学関連の専門書「I do like CFD, VOL.1」はNational Institute of Aerospace（NIA）の玄関にあるショーケースに飾られていた。この本は私が勝手に書いて、勝手にペンネームでオンデマンド出版したもの。それを飾りたいと言ってもらえて嬉しかったのを覚えている。その頃、この本はラングレー研究所でもよく知られるようになっていた。

これまでの経験から、良いアルゴリズムとは、往々にして単純なものであると私は思っている。現在、私は馴染みのない、ある複雑な数式で表されるアルゴリズムの拡張に取り組んでいるが、その複雑さにかなり苦労している。式が複雑すぎるため、うまくいかないときに「なぜうまくいかないのか」が分かりにくい。
驚いたことに、その複雑なアルゴリズムを最初に提案した論文を読んでも、明確な説明がない。そこで私は一旦あきらめて、一から自分で考え、同様の目的を達成する単純なアルゴリズムを構築した。実際に試すと、これが非常に良い結果をもたらすので驚いている。
果たして、私はこれを喜んで良いのか、それとも何か見落としていて、より複雑な問題に対しては通用しないのか。それは次の共同研究者とのミーティングで明らかになるだろう。

来月末に、あるプロジェクトの中間報告を行うことになっている。その内容次第で、来年度も予算が継続されるかどうかが決まる。それを確実なものにするためには、研究が順調に進展していることをアピールするだけでは不十分。現在の手法には明確な限界があり、それを打破するためには、この新しいアプローチが必要であることを証明する必要がある。プランは立てた。あとは、期待する計算結果が期限までにきちんと揃うかどうか。

アドバイザーが卒業を決めるとなると、パワハラなどの問題が起きそうに思えるが、不思議と私の周りではそうした事例をほとんど見聞きしたことがない。
博士学生を卒業させるとアドバイザーにボーナスが支給される仕組みがあったため、何か問題があっても「卒業させてしまえば全員ハッピー」ということだった可能性もある。

私がミシガン大学大学院にいた頃（1994〜2007年）、博士課程を修了する要件は特になく、アドバイザーが「いいだろう」と言えば卒業が決まっていた。そのため、さまざまなケースがあった。フェローシップや研究費が切れるので卒業という人もいれば、配偶者の転職で引っ越すことになったので卒業という人もいた。 もちろん、ある程度の成果がなければ卒業はできない。ある教授は明確に「ここまでできないと卒業はさせられない」と言った。ただ、「査読論文3本」のような明確な基準がなかったので、全体的にゆるい感じではあった。今も同じかどうかは知らないが、私は査読論文0本、学会発表1回で博士号を取得したので、ゆるくて助かったのかもしれない。 どのようなやり方がベストなのかはわからない。「査読論文を条件としたところで、ゴミ論文が増えるだけだ」と言う人もいる。一方、基準がないと質の悪い博士が生まれるかもしれないが、そのような擾乱はどうやっても生じてしまうとも言える。。
