@stan_sdcollins I’ve heard them called “American Men” in southern Labrador - I wonder why that is?

An Inuksuk overlooking Neddy’s Harbour. Indigenous people use these markers to indicate important trails on barren land in the north.

Dead moose 1.5 kms from Witless Bay line, westbound. Moose is in the middle of the right lane, many vehicles stopped ahead of the moose, none behind. I just ran over a portion of it. @NLTrafficAlerts

@Sam__Broomfield great job on the FB live Cain’s Quest recap, loved the stories and I think I spotted an old CN mug?

@jackiecoates I have a recipe that’s probably a century old given to a friend by an 80yr old 20 yrs ago, she’d gotten it from her mother so it’s old but it works for make ahead potatoes, company size, and I’m pretty certain it’s the sour cream that helps it keep 3 days in the fridge.

@jackiecoates I wonder if it has something to do with added fat like milk, butter, cheese or sour cream. Frozen soup with potato just doesn’t work out for sure. I’ve been curious about the Costco frozen scalloped potatoes. Thanks for sharing, will have to try this.

@PeterCBC Very interesting, what patience! I like the Mutti in chili and the San Marzano for spag sauce. And always add a little parm, balsamic vinegar or glaze and a little sugar for texture (more than for sweetness). Q: what’s your favourite pasta?

Here at the Cowan family we strive for excellence in our taste tests. One difference between the 3 Italians (which ranked low) and the Canadian grown ones, was salt. We cooked them as is. Without salt. The San Marzano were lower in salt so may have affected their ranking

@PeterCBC Look forward to the critique :). I’ve made sauce with fresh, very ripe skinned tomatoes that have had the centre removed ($$) but even then there are come tinned tomatoes that seem to have more depth of flavour.

@DonnaPaddon Yes there’s also a big difference with how liquidy they are

We’re settling a family argument tonight. Are more expensive tomatoes any better than the cheap ones? It’s time for a #tomatotasteoff We have 7 different types. From supermarket brand to Italian, two San Marzano and one home bottled. Which one is best? Let’s find out

@PeterCBC Did you take a close look at the colour of the tomatoes? I find some cans have a lot of the centre of the tomato, or aren’t as ripe, then there’s the type of tomato lol.

@DonnaPaddon Yes there will be a raw tasting. But if they all taste the same when cooked (which is how they are used) then is that really a difference?

@PeterCBC There is, some are tinny tasting and it is noticeable in a sauce.

@PeterCBC Try tasting them before adding any other ingredients, that’s where the difference can easily be found.

We cooked up some onion and garlic and divided them equally by weight. We’re now cooking them for 20 minutes. They’re also getting some pepper (8 turns). The different sizes of pot introduce some variability but #tomatotasteoff

@PeterCBC There’s definitely a difference in my opinon, some are bland, watery, not canned at peak ripeness.

The fishing community of Battle Harbour on an island off the Labrador coast. This community was restored by a heritage society and tourists can actually stay there in one of the restored homes. The white building is the small towns general store. It is my favourite place.
