I still think it's funny that North Korea got so sick of the Western travel influencers who came to the 2025 Pyongyang Marathon that they outright cancelled the race this year. Take that Western imperialists!

@daniel_dsj2110 I listened to that same podcast episode and had the same reaction. Just so long as they're our bad guy, it's okay apparently. I like Kotkin's Russia work but whenever he leaves his field of expertise, things get a lot fuzzier and verges on being pro-U.S imperialism.

Stephen Kotkin: "I should say that I am not against authoritarianism in every specific case…Right? There can be authoritarian regimes that are pro-western, supportive of the United States. They’re disappointments domestically, in how they treat their own people, in the lack of limits on their power and behavior, and also the lack of corrective mechanisms. But there are cases and one can enumerate the ones that people like." @timbarker/note/c-230694484" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">substack.com/@timbarker/not…

@AKDay89 I contend that the worst thing to happen to Trump was Delcy Rodriguez. In his simple jack brain, he thought every regime would be like that.

The future for Cuba that some neo-cons in Miami and Washington want.
60 Minutes@60Minutes

Haiti’s president was assassinated in 2021. Since then, security in the capital, Port-au-Prince, has rapidly deteriorated. The city is now largely controlled by gangs. "In a very dangerous place, it's important that you get in, get out as quickly as possible," said @AndersonCooper. The 60 Minutes team drove in a convoy of armored vehicles with bulletproof vests and heavily armed Haitian security personnel. cbsn.ws/4lBzwDh

I have never heard you speak about South Carolina before. Never once. Odd, you're more interested in Tehran than Charleston.
Lindsey Graham@LindseyGrahamSC

Just spoke to @POTUS about our European allies’ unwillingness to provide assets to keep the Strait of Hormuz functioning, which benefits Europe far more than America. I have never heard him so angry in my life. I share that anger given what’s at stake. The arrogance of our allies to suggest that Iran with a nuclear weapon is of little concern and that military action to stop the ayatollah from acquiring a nuclear bomb is our problem not theirs is beyond offensive. The European approach to containing the ayatollah’s nuclear ambitions have proven to be a miserable failure. The repercussions of providing little assistance to keep the Strait of Hormuz functioning are going to be wide and deep for Europe and America. I consider myself very forward-leaning on supporting alliances, however at a time of real testing like this, it makes me second guess the value of these alliances. I am certain I am not the only senator who feels this way.

@MJ_Busta I feel like the Cuban leadership fundamentally misunderstands basic economics and won’t even look to the market Leninist lessons of China or Vietnam. It’s maddening.

In an article published about a year or so ago, historian Stephen Kotkin explained the possible futures of Russia. One pathway was a North Korean-style future, with information blockades and a further curtailment of political freedoms. Seems like they are going that way.
SPRAVDI — Stratcom Centre@StratcomCentre

With some afraid to give their opinions on camera, Russians complain that it's difficult to live now that the Czar has taken away not only their social media applications, but now their internet as well, comparing the country to North Korea. Unable to communicate, get taxis, use banking applications or pay at restaurants, Russians also cite that if they complain, "police will take us to a dark place".
