2. Eastern Partnership states aren’t direct players but they’re highly exposed: • Energy import dependence • Inflation shocks • Trade disruption spillovers They’re basically shock absorbers for bigger powers.

In #Berlin 🇩🇪🇪🇺 this week talking about #EU 🇪🇺, #Iran 🇮🇷, #Ukraine 🇺🇦 and #Türkiye 🇹🇷 Quick 4-points 👇⤵️ 1️⃣ The US 🇺🇸 is squeezing China 🇨🇳 in an attempt to divide 🇨🇳🇷🇺 #DragonBear. Sanctions relief on Russia 🇷🇺 (from Washington perspective) does precisely that. US 🇺🇸 will (inevitably) try to strike a 🇺🇸🇷🇺 deal with Russia 🇷🇺 at some point. Two questions: ⚠️ Will Russia 🇷🇺 bite? (Difficult to determine/open question) ⚠️ What will the reaction be of UK 🇬🇧, EU27 🇪🇺+ 🇹🇷🇽🇰🇷🇸🇦🇱🇲🇪🇺🇦🇲🇩🇲🇰🇧🇦🇬🇪🇦🇿🇦🇲 + Canada 🇨🇦 & Norway 🇳🇴? (Expect some to split, while others will cement more like inner core E6+ and accession, as others inevitably are less willing due to US 🇺🇸 pressure) 2️⃣ Israel 🇮🇱 is filling the #MiddleEasternVacuum & taking advantage of “US 🇺🇸 attention in region before it further pivots to Asia” 2️⃣ US 🇺🇸 will use Türkiye 🇹🇷 & EU’s 🇪🇺 “naive switch to costly LNG gas 🚢⛽️ as leverage” in order to try to persuade them about Iran 🇮🇷, but equally to impose trade conditions, digital agenda etc. 3️⃣ EU 🇪🇺 has bargaining power despite looking weak (e.g. 400 million consumer union; how much % defence procurement it will take from US versus EU-made; Pharma-sector dominance; enormous European/German investments in US; regulatory frameworks; common trade policy). But further weaponisation isn’t taken lightly, and for non EU Europeans like Türkiye 🇹🇷 or Ukraine 🇺🇦 it may be even harder unless they get closer institutionally to EU 🇪🇺. 4️⃣ Greenland 🇬🇱 situation has taught everyone an important lesson: weaponisation is inevitable; and only further unity, realistic-bargaining and the development of better relations between other Gulf/Middle Eastern/Caucasus/CA counties (middle powers included) can help secure European and other middle powers’ national interests an business interest to preserve domestic stability, flow of goods, illegal migration and lower energy prices.
