If I ask for feedback that does not mean I want feedback from an AI model. I want it from an actual reader

I have written and submitted a 2100 word story with a. Optional extra 450 word prequel that would read well as a postscript. If it's not right for the publication, I'll post it here for free. It's been damned good writing again. #amwriting

@GaiusKonstantin I confess that I don’t spend much time thinking about it... I write until I feel the chapter has fulfilled its purpose. 🤔 My chapters range from 2,000 to 12,000 words, which I think is similar to other long-form sci-fi works, such as those by Neal Stephenson.

Chapters I’ve seen it all when it comes to chapters, from those that are 40K words in length to others that are only 200. Authors, please, avoid these extremes. A chapter the length of a novella is not doing anyone any good. Casual readers who do not go through a book in a single sitting tend to take a break when a chapter ends. If that chapter is a third of your book…it’s not pretty, even with multiple scene breaks. On the other hand, single-paragraph chapters, while occasionally useful, can be seen as an attempt to inflate page count if used often. Ideally and depending on genre, 1,000-4,000 words should be your target. Keep in mind, with younger readers especially, shorter chapters are the preference. Oh, as far as chapter titles, they are nice but not a must. Think of them as an accessory like a tie-clip or earrings. They can add value, but their absence is hardly noticed.

@GaiusKonstantin I try to keep mine around the 5k mark. Some are 3.5k-4.5k, some reach into the mid 7k. All depending on the scenes

@real_mpwilcox It's a short story and what you did is not unreasonable. M.P. What hurts and turned into a slog was reading a novel of some 100K words split into exactly three chapters. WTF?

I haven’t announced anything about my current project yet, so here we go: I’m writing my first YA fantasy dystopian. I’ve written lots of YA fantasy, but it’s my first time in the dystopian sub-genre! #writingcommunity
