this is so fucking wholesome guy used AI to save his cancer-ridden dog by sequencing its DNA and creating a CUSTOM cure. the tech behind this is fucking awesome (well done @demishassabis and the google team): - used CHATGPT to sequence dogs DNA discovers mutations - ran the mutations through Google’s Alphafold (AI protein sequencer) which CREATED A CUSTOM VACCINE TO TREAT THEM. - treated dog and reduced tumour by 50% in WEEKS. dog is alive and well. - this is the 1st time AI has been used to create a custom vaccine for a dog (and it worked) - dude is now working on similar vaccines for humans using AI! 2026 is definitely the year we see AI change personalised medicine in a HUGE way so sick

I'm going to be hosting Kent Beck for an hour on my live with Tim show on oreilly.com this coming Wednesday November 12 at 11 am EST to talk about coding with AI. Kent is one of the most influential figures in modern software development. He created Extreme Programming (XP), co-authored the Agile Manifesto, and pioneered Test-Driven Development (TDD). In other words, he defined many of the best practices that shaped how generations of developers write and think about code. More recently, he’s been working on a series of books about what he calls “tidy” development. (In the initial book, Tidy First?, he likens a “tidying” to “a little baby miniature refactoring.”) Messy code has always been a problem. AI-generated code, which can be verbose, poorly documented, and possibly hallucinatory, only raises the stakes. His forthcoming book Tidy Together (the second of three on Tidy), expands the focus from individuals to the teams collaborating to “grow” software (importantly, not “assemble” it). As Kent explains, this reframing underscores that the system in which your software is developed is equally as important as the software itself, so you need to tend to it. In the third volume, he'll be addressing coding with AI more directly. Kent spoke about some of this at the first O’Reilly CodeCon back in May. He talked not only about how developers can work effectively with AI while maintaining the discipline and craft that has always defined great software, but also about bringing back joy to programming. I also want to see if we can shed some light on questions like what carries over from Agile/XP to the age of AI?; are there new agile techniques that apply to teams of coders, non-coders, and AI?; what do old programmers know that new programmers still need to learn? What can we throw away?; and with AI generated code, who takes responsibility for code the developer didn't write? And the more quickly you suggest things you want to hear about, the more we may diverge from that plan!
