At @Rails World 2025, I introduced ReActionView, an initiative to explore what's possible in the Rails view layer for 2025 and beyond. As part of this, I announced Herb::Engine, an ActionView-compatible ERB engine built on top of the HTML-aware Herb Parser. #RailsWorld2025

I had a great time at the Ruby Community Conference last week! The mix of the pre-conference meetup, the conference day itself, and the social activities afterward made for a really great experience. Looking forward to coming back for a future edition! 🙌

Now that Herb v0.9 is out, we can start advancing the tooling around `<%= render %>` calls, find unused partials, and build up a graph to understand which partials are referenced from which views! This is also going to be very essential for reactivity.

I really appreciated that Herb added strict local checking in v0.9 (thanks @marcoroth_ ), and I really loved that Claude was able to fix 30 partials one (multi-agent) shot.

You could use this to build, for example, an extremely fast formatter for a programming language written in C.

I built a C99 single-header implementation of the Wadler A Prettier Printer algorithm. It's... very fast. Most nodes in the tree are alloc-free because of tagged pointers. It caches flat width for very fast layout. Happy with it. github.com/kddnewton/pp

@domster @excid3 Form collections are tricky. But if you have any ideas or thoughts on how to improve it I'm all ears.

@marcoroth_ @excid3 Oh man that hover support is gonna be handy. Maybe one day I’ll remember form collection syntax. Looking forward to seeing what linter options we have now.

v0.9 is all about making the foundation rock solid so we can start building more ambitious things on top of it. The arena allocator is fully integrated, error messages are friendlier and more actionable, and the formatter received lots of bug fixes bringing it closer to leaving experimental status.
